Running in the Italian Lakes District

The Lakes of Northern Italy are one of the most beautiful locations in the area, set against the foothills of the alps. You can see glaciers, forests, meadows, lakes, and villages all in one scene. There are five main lakes, Como, Maggiore, Orta, Garda, and Iseo. Perfect for hiking, running, biking, kayaking, and exploring the historical sites.

Lake Como: Italy’s most famous lake. It’s located a half hour north of Milan and known for its lavish villas. Bellagio is known to be the most romantic town on Lake Como.

Lake Maggiore: This lake is also north of Milan and extends into Switzerland. It has three islands called the Borromeo Islands that can be reached by ferry. Lake Maggiore is also home to some beautiful botanical and zoological gardens, as well as castles, and a 12th century church. There's plenty of spots for hiking, biking, kayaking, and rafting.

Lake Orta: Lake Orta is west of Lake Maggiore and Como. The island of San Giulio is the only island in Orta and is accessible by boat. There are beautiful views of the mountains, Sacro Monte. A poetry festival is hosted here every fall.

Lake Garda: Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and is located between Venice and Milan.  There are many parks around the lake as well as botanical gardens. The climate surrounding Garda Lake supports both Alpine and Medditeranian environments.

Lake Iseo: Lake Iseo is not listed on many brochures and therefore offers a less populated and more peaceful atmosphere. There are lush green mountains surrounding a crystal clear lake. The shores are bordered with several medieval towns including Iseo, Sarnico, Riva di Solto, Lovere, and Marone.
