Bhutan International Marathon

Bhutan International Marathon March 2, 2024

Overview

The Bhutan International Marathon and Half-Marathon features some of the most spectacular scenery offered on an international circuit. Starting at an elevation of 6700 t. in sight of Himalayan peaks that never lose snow cover, the route follows the Mo Chhu river past the temples and villages and rice paddies of Punakha Valley before crossing a 100-meter suspension bridge to finish at Punakha Dzong fortress, the ancient seat of government and winter home of the monastic body.

It is almost entirely a rural route, the terrain mostly flat or gradual downhills, half on the hard-packed dirt road and half on the tarmac. A half marathon is also offered starting at the halfway point of the full marathon and also ending at Punakha Dzong, elevation 1200 m (3937 ft).

The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) organizes this marathon, aiming to nurture a running culture in Bhutan while giving international competitors the chance to experience Bhutan's beauty through a unique sporting exchange. The BOC pumps back 100% of the profits into developing running awareness campaigns and clinics for Bhutanese youth and Olympic sports programs.
