Ultra Marathon - 74km: Cairns to Port Douglas - The Great Barrier Reef Ultra Marathon starts in the James Cook University carpark and makes its way up the range through Kuranda. From Kuranda you follow the scenic Black Mountain Rd through rainforest, passed huge eucalypts, pine plantations and across picturesque creeks. You are running in the Mowbray National Park within the World Heritage Wet Tropics featuring the pyramid-shaped Black Mountain. This tropical rainforest is home to the endangered southern cassowary, a flightless bird that can grow to two metres in height. Registration 3:30 a.m., James Cook University. Race begins at 4:30 a.m.. Cutoff time is 3 p.m. or at the 57km mark.
Marathon - 42.195km: Race alongside Steve Moneghetti! Race starts at 5:30 a.m. The marathon starts down the length of the beautiful Four Mile Beach and exists up through Four Mile Park. The route turns away from the beach and takes runners through the outskirts of Port Douglas towards the Mowbray Valley. After 6km you reach the Mowbray River at Diggers Bridge – known as “Crocodile Creek” as crocodiles do enter these waters… and onward to the finish through spectacular views.
From here there's about 7km on a backtracking stretch up the hill of Spring Creek Road where you pass the calm (and crocodile-free) stream of Spring Creek.
Half Marathon - 21.0975km: Starts on Main Beach (Four Mile Beach) in front of the Lifesavers hut. Runners will be marshaled on the Esplanade prior. The course heads straight up the magnificent length of Four Mile Beach. Runners will then exit the beach at Sea Temple Resort and make their way up a path adjacent Sea Temple Resort.
