Day 6Touring: ANGKOR WITH SUNRISE FULL DAY PRIVATE TOUR Description: We begin with a pre-dawn departure (4.30 to 5.00 am depending on the time of year) from your hotel for sunrise outside Angkor Wat. Enter the great temple in darkness (please bring a torch) from the little-visited eastern side, and creep along hoary cloistered corridors past the longest stretch of bas-relief carvings in the world. Soak up the atmosphere of dawn at Angkor, from the edge of one of the ancient library pools. We then explore the interior of the great temple, spending a thorough two hours discovering the corridors, central chambers and upper terraces of this truly great temple. Your expert local guide will decipher the myriad of stories behind the bas-relief carvings, and give you an insight into life during the height of the Khmer empire. We end our touring at Angkor with breakfast outside the temple (take away, from your hotel), and a short rest. Continue the morning by driving through Angkor Thom city and visit the temple of Bayon before moving on to Preah Khan temple, a ruined but highly atmospheric melange of tree roots and crumbling stone structures. Construction of this site was commissioned by the great ''temple builder' Jayavaraman VII (in honor of his father) and a visit to this smaller site makes for an interesting contrast with the more imposing Angkor Wat. Preah Khan is currently being restored by the World Monument Fund and in places is in remarkably good condition. At the end of the morning return to your hotel for lunch and a swim, and in the afternoon drive to Banteay Kdei temple, a setting for the movie 'Lord Jim' and currently under restoration by a Japanese university. We end the afternoon with a visit to jungle-enveloped Ta Prohm, one of the most atmospheric of all temples in Angkor and sister site of Preah Khan. Once home to 2,740 monks, Ta Prohm today looks much as it did in the early 1850s, when French explorer Henri Mouhot 'rediscovered' this crumbling site. At the end of the day, we catch a final sunset glimpse of Angkor Wat, then return to our hotel. Today is a long but fulfilling day which will leave you with lifetime memories of some of the most impressive monuments built by mankind. Page 5 of 8 Inclusions: Transport by modern air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing as specified in the itinerary, entrance fees, local English-speaking guide
Day 7Touring: BOENG MEALEA AND BANTEAY SREI TEMPLE FULL DAY PRIVATE TOUR Description: Today we visit three of the most interesting temples outside Angkor Thom city. Departing your hotel at 8.00 am, you begin with a drive for two hours hour through scenic rural Cambodia to Boeng Mealea temple. En route we stop at Dom Deak town for a wander through a typical Cambodian village market. Mid-morning we arrive at King Suryavarman II's eleventh century Boeng Mealea temple - a prototype for the more famous Angkor Wat. Boeng Mealea stands almost forgotten in jungle and getting to the site is quite an adventure in itself. Isolated during Cambodia's civil war, Boeng Mealea was under the control of the Khmer Rouge for decades but has since been 'de-mined' and outsiders can now safely visit this temple. It is the largest temple outside the main Angkor complex and in places it is remarkably intact, but in other places utterly destroyed; tree roots envelop many of the temple walls and doorways. The atmosphere here is eerie but a welcome contrast to the more visited temples closer to Angkor Wat. Boeng Mealea shares many characteristics with Angkor Wat, but on a smaller scale. It has three encircling galleries, the same four gates and entrances, and a pair of interior libraries. It differs from Angkor Wat in having only one central tower instead of the famous five towers of Angkor Wat. We end out stay at this special site with a picnic lunch and then set out for the intricately carved and well-preserved Banteay Srei. The detailed reliefs on this smaller sandstone structure are regarded as the finest, most skillfully crafted in Cambodia. Banteay Srei has only been accessible since the late 1990s, when the Khmer Rouge left the area. We end our discoveries of the temples of Angkor with a brief stop at well-preserved Banteay Samre, a laterite structure which once featured internal moats. Late afternoon return to town after a memorable days exploration. Lunch included. Inclusions: Transport by modern air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing as specified in the itinerary, entrance fees, local English-speaking guide, picnic lunch
